Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes is a condition that weakens and/or damages the body’s ability to process blood glucose, otherwise known as blood sugar. Normally, insulin released from pancreas, an organ behind the stomach helps the body in storing and using the sugar and fat from the food consumed. So diabetes happens when very little or no insulin is produced by the pancreas or in some cases when the body’s response to insulin is inappropriate. How to Reverse Type 2 Diabetes

 

Below we have listed 16 diabetes diet tips for diabetics that will help you on your journey of reversing diabetes.

1. Choose the foods from the plant sources. Focus on the four new food groups. They are Whole Grains, Legumes, and Vegetables & Fruits.

2. Whole Grains: Whole wheat flour chapattis, whole wheat bread, other grains like bajri (pearl millet), jowar (sorghum millet), barley, oats okay. Brown rice is okay. Finer the grain, and when the fiber is removed, it is high glycemic food.

3. Legumes: All beans, peas, lentils. Soak for 8 hours and then cook. This way one can digest them much better. They are good source of fiber.

4. Vegetables: All veggies are good to eat. Add these for sure in your diet plan. Sweet potatoes,Cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, green beans etc. Choose vegetables which are low in glycemic index.

5. Fruits: All fruits except pineapple and water melon initially. All fruits in moderation. Choose those with lower Glycemic index. Always take fruits as whole with the fiber. Never take fruit juices where fiber is removed. Sweeter the fruit, higher the glycemic index. Therefore, do not take too sweet or over ripe fruit initially.

6. Avoid these foods: Meats, poultry, fish, eggs (whites & yolks), and all dairy products (regular and fat free), including milk, dahi (curd), paneer (cottage cheese), ice cream, butter, ghee (purified butter) etc. (100% plant based diet).

7. Avoid all oils such as cooking oils, salad oils, margarine etc. Once in a while, some amount of cold pressed oil may be ok.

8. No fried foods and junk foods. Strictly no samosas, batata vada, potato chips, bhajia etc if you are an Indian.

9. Avoid all processed foods, refined foods and foods with high glycemic index such as maida items, white bread, white rice, white potatoes etc.

10. Avoid tea, coffee as these are stimulants. They indirectly affect the blood sugar levels.

11. No white sugar. No artificial sweeteners. Can take raisins. Dates just one or two. Take very less of dry fruits.

12. ‘Live foods’, raw, whole, unprocessed food is the best. Raw foods are generally low glycemic foods and more cooked a food is, higher is the glycemic index.

13. Eat only as much as you can digest. Do not over eat.

14. Do not sleep excessively.

15. Do your exercise regularly.

16. Do not eat cold food as far as possible.
